John Shaw's Original Oil Paintings

Watergate Bay
Site description: I describe myself as a versatile artist with a keen interest in all subjects, I just love painting, please take a look at my original oil paintings, completed at my own artist studio in Cornwall.
Editors comment: These paintings take my breath away, the quality of these oils is, well, quite brilliant.
Watergate Bay above is just brimming with all the hubbub of a typical summer day. You can almost smell the salt and feel the spray in your face. I could go on for ever describing this painting, what must the original look like, breathtaking.
The way John has blended the blues of the sky, the warmth that radiates downward into the water, the sand beneath the water, the rich tones of yellows and reds blended skillfully, the composition, one third, two thirds, perffect.
This painting is priced at £175.00, how's that for a price.

Godrevy Lighthouse |
Above left This painting, 'Trevuanace Cove St Agnes' another painting that is 'alive' with, well, life. The colours in the sky are vibrant, they are lovely, the children playing at the waters edge, just more of the beautiful Cornish coast.
Then 'Mullion Cove Sunset' calm and serene, very peaceful. More rich tones and the colour perspective is excellent, the emphasis on the last moments of daylight are captured quite exquisitely.
'Rough Sea at Godrevy' hazy sunshine, screaming gulls, the way John paints the water shines through here, the sand is picked up and is swirling in the surf to give this luminosity that always evaded me as a watercolour painter, I'm just not good enough anyway. Oils are for this type of work, period.
'Surf at Godrevy' I have sat and looked at this painting for ages now, I am having a struggle to best describe it. The top of the breaking surf is just 'dancing' in the wind, the wave is trying to roll it over and the wind is just teasing it from its grasp. Poetic this may be but it's the truth, as the atlantic ocean reaches the end of its long journey the artist freeze frames it for us, yes us, isn't he a talent.
'Godrevy Lighthouse' last in this line, as with all of these paintings you must visit the artist to see the larger image, my thumbnails really are poor. the brushstrokes in the sky alone are beautiful, a delight to look at, the gentle arc of cloud beneath the late warm sunshine instill peace. Beneath that lies an almost, metallic even, treatment of the sea. As the sea breaks onto the sand John has somehow created the most magical of reflections I have ever seen. The rocks, well they just finish the painting off. |

Mullion Cove
Now for 'Mullion Cove' This is another painting that shows the extent of the artists ability to re-create life from the cold blank white that is canvas. Above the large image we have a sunset of this enchanting place that can only be Cornwal. Here we have the same view in daylight. The calmness of the sea the softness of the shadows makes this a place I would like to visit. John has a deft touch with the brushes and an excellent eye for detail, his colour mixing is just amazing.

Jack Sparrow
What can I say to describe 'Jack Sparrow', £500.00 is the price, that has to be a bargain. This painting is about as photographic as it's possible to get, when I study this painting in detail it just gets better, the artist has used light, just ordinary light, to bring the portrait alive. I know everyone does that, not quite like this though. Just look at the loose sand on the left foot, a small detail but very clever, the soft shadow behind the loose cloth, the creases in the shirt sleeves and above all the redness in the cheeks that has to have been created by the sea, wind and sun. The artist has captured it all. Incredible painting.
