The art of Tom Henderson SmithSite description: Tom’s vibrant paintings and atmospheric charcoal drawings explore the ways that human presence over thousands of years is reflected in Cornwall’s landscape forms.. Pieces based on Cornish Festivals like Golowan and Lafrowda are another feature of his work. Editors comment: This artist from Cornwall has truly mastered the art of painting atmosphere, the sea and street carnivals where he lives. Painting seascapes is never easy. With little to give perspective except colour and tone, many paintings can come un-stuck; Tom's never fail to work and I can honestly recommend you to pay him a visit. |

From Porthmeor to GodrevyIn this painting we have strong colour with the light dancing on the breaking waves which serve to help the composition and sense of distance. Most of Tom's work involves distance and light, this is one example. |
The first row: The 'Peacock-summer, Lafrowda festival 2011', is a vibrant painting that gives a sense of the fun to be had at carnival time - a lovely painting that captures the mood brilliantly. Next is, 'Snow, Bosworlas Rocks to Bartinney', a lovely moody winter's day again showing pale blues and huge distance. Then I have chosen, 'Boatyard', a different composition to the norm with boats showing their reflection and the skillful way they have been drawn. The second row: 'Big sky over St.Ives Bay', shows St.Ives in the distance and the distant sea beyond. What a beautiful sky as well, huge summer clouds 'ballooning' up above. 'Bed-rock, Kenidjack Valley', is the opposite, a composition of rock and gorse using glorious colour to the maximum. 'St. Ives in the ocean light' - moody and atmospheric is this one. |

Lafrowda 2008This painting shows everyone to be having fun, the two girls at the front set the tone for the rest of the work. Excellent perspective enables the viewer to make no mistake, you are seeing a vibrant street carnival.Visit Tom Henderson Smith Here. |
The third row of images: Now 'Summer hillside, Cot Valley', a vibrant use of reds, against cool blues and greens, bright and lovely. 'Shoreline, Portheras', moving water with strong light and cool reflections make this work stand out for me, it's just right. Last is, 'Light on the sea, Longships', again massive use of light which is making the water glisten and glow with the lone lighthouse standing on the rocks. The last row comprises: 'Tide washed shore, Sennen Cove' is the first painting here, a lovely close-up study that uses cool colours to emphasise mood and reflection. Next is, 'Rain Off-Shore'. There's atmosphere again in the work, cool blues with a little warm yellow. Made it sound easy haven't I? Then I have chosen, 'Breeze in the Barley' - different colours here with greens being the prominent force. Look how the barley sways, good or what? |
