Peter Weston

Peter's Watercolour Art Gallery

Site description: Since I started painting in 2007 I have tried to work as an artist and painter in the English Watercolour tradition. The two subjects I love to paint are landscapes and seascapes.

I Draw my inspiration from the atmospheric and dramatic scenery ready available from both the Quantock hills in Somerset and various parts of the South Wales coastline, one with its steep and winding valleys and and the other with its rugged coast line.

Editors comment: Peter paints in my favourite medium, the paintings offer a delightful insight into the artists mind. Uncluttered, clear and focused on the task in hand. He mentions in his description about putting too much detail into his work, that's a tough call, it's easy to over-paint, more so in watercolour.
A mess usually results. The artist has figured that one out and the result is clear, inspiring contemporary watercolour paintings. I like all of Peter's work, it's a pleasure on the eye. Visit Peter Weston Here.

Winter barn

The Winter Barn painting above,  is quite beautiful, it has an American look about it, it is however another good example of how watercolour lends itself to snow paintings.

I shall start with'Castle Combe', this painting is full of complicated perspective, the drawing has to be right or else the painting will never work, the drawing is right. The end product is a beautiful painting. The next one is 'Chicken Shack', this work has an American look to it, anyway I love the old barn treatment, weather battered old roofs, well weathered wall boards. The ground has been razed by the birds, and it shows.. Nice touch. Now 'Entrance 101', a typically beautiful British farm. The artist has again captured the perspective in detail, the viewers eye is drawn into the work down the lane, and then to the buildings. A splash of colour just finish this off nicely.

The next row: 'First Snow of Winter', this is just a very nice picture. Peter, has captured the snow so well, the gentle, subtle shadows emphasise it beautifully. Watercolour and snow is a beautiful combination. Then 'Summer Time', glorious colour, this painting is all about colour and it really does work. The artist has excelled in this work, the tall trees against the light colour of the shrubs, the buildings fade away nicely. Followed by 'Village Church', I like the way the artist uses blue in his landscapes, bluebells they must be, so this is late spring early summer and the blues really do work well together. He uses greens very well, just gentle, not overbearing, in all of the landscapes we see the excellent use of tone. Very good, I do like this work.

The scope of this artist's talent is quite incredible. Visit Peter Weston Here.

strumble head lighthouse

The large image below, Strumble Head Lighthouse, is one of my favourites as well. The colours in this painting are beautiful, even the greens, which can be a nightmare to paint, are perfect.

The composition of the work is well thought out, in fact the whole painting is just lovely...

The third row, the 'Poppy Field', is a scene well suited to Peter, he has captured the moment very well. Next, 'The Bridge', a lovely traditional watercolour, the artist has a good sense of colour and how the tones work in this medium, excellent. 'Country Barn', a typical country lane view. The artist seems to excel at painting the weathered look associated with these type of farm buildings. A nice use of greens again, nothing garish, the rustic colours of the buildings add to the overall finish, a few spots of red as well, neat.

The last row: 'Lindhome House', A nice palette is used in this painting, gentle pastel tones make a rather plain subject very appealing. Another splash of red makes good company for the greens. 'Castle Hill', this is one of my favourite paintings by Peter Weston, a potential nightmare of perspective challenges the artist, nice soft colours used in the old ruins are complimented by gentle greens. The whole work just 'works' for me. Overall a lovely painting. 'Country Lane', we finish with the rolling hills that are just, 'British', this painting has good colour perspective, tone and overall balance. The fence and walkway break the line of the lane nicely, the tonal value of the green fields works well with well defined distance.
