Landscape Artist Chris Chalk

Site description: Landscapes and Seascapes by West Wales Landscape Artist Chris Chalk - Original Paintings and Prints. Editors comment: I'm not sure where to begin, this artist's work made has made my job a pure pleasure. From the moody painting below left, 'Across the tops - Preseli landscape', to the bright strong 'Dolgoch Landscape - Cambrian Mountains', colour rich and much stronger. A prolific painter such as Chris seems able to change from landscape, to portrait, to animals in a flash, no matter which painting he's working on they get the same attention to detail, and my goodness isn't he good. Dolgoch Landscape, Cambrian MountainsA walk into the glorious Cambrian Mountains, pretty good. from the cool blues of the distant mountains to the warmer middle distance, only then do we start to see the soft greens. An excellent use of colour to give us a feeling of space. I do like the main tree as well, strong and aiding perfection to the composition.. Follow this link to see the main painting. The first row: The 'Ceibwr Bay Cliffs', this painting is 'alive' with movement, the artist has combined the warm and cool colours well, I like the distant sky, if you look you can see a little warmth shining through the crazy movement. 'Fishguard, Pembrokeshire', A place I have visited and Chris has captured it very well. The gentle hills in the background merging into the strong structure of the harbour, the distant, soft, greens, lovely work. 'Fishing Boat - Ruby', the title speaks for itself, I just love the way this work again captures the sunlight, lovely work again. The second row: The next is 'Ty'n Cornel Hostel, Mid Wales', my type of painting, a good rich palette gives nice strong colour, just look at the sky! A subject that shows excellent perspective, good tonal balance and strong sunlight, the birds floating in the sky, everything is just quite beautiful. 'Llangrannog Beach', Another painting of Llangrannog Bay, the distinct rock is instantly identifiable. 'West Wales', the strong treatment of the tree gives good emphasis to the vast landscape behind. The cool blues quietly come forward and change to green, terrific colour balance here. The old fence completes the composition. |

The large image below, 'Across the Tops - Preseli landscape', In this work I can feel the warmth of the low sun as it creeps across the landscape, this warmth is evident too in the clouds of the sky. The artist has a good eye for perspective and this work is a good example of that, the way the track vanishes into the distance. Excellent composition give this a well balanced finished painting. |

Across the Tops, Preseli LandscapeThis painting just captures the intense mood that prevails on the Welsh mountains. The vast open spaces that can be so difficult to capture are seen here. I like the way Chris uses colour to portray that vast landscape, together with light. An excellent painting see the main image here. Follow this link to the home page. |
The third row of images: This work, 'Going Fishing', Now this is one I do like, low tide on the Teifi in West Wales. Very little movement of the water mean some nice reflections, again excellent distance and the light catching the boat, beautiful. 'Llangrannog Sea View', A lovely small beach at llangrannog, I too have painted this bay and Chris has got it to perfection.. 'Summer at Aberporth', I didn't realise that there are two beaches at Aberporth, a place to relax and admire the pure beauty of Wales. The last row comprises: 'Pentre Ifan, Pembrokeshire', The standing stones here are almost 'brutal' when taken in context to the surroundings, 3500 AD is how old they are believed to be. 'The Old Boat House', This old tin boathouse is a lovely painting, the way the artist has captured the light! Perfect. 'Mountain Road', I love this type of painting, subtle colour tones together with tonal perspective make for a great landscape.. |
